This is our story
January 29th > February 9th
Foundouk Gargaa, Marrakech

A group show curated by Camille de Sancy which highlights the work of three women artists, who talk, from near and far, of their attachment to the Moroccan territory. Soumiya Jalal attempts to repare and conciliate her two identities : the artist’s and the architect’s. Brodeuse Voyageuse relates stories through her embroideries of Moroccan topography while raising awareness about climat changes. Anastasia Komyakova emphasizes on the significance of human connections and communication, capturing the essence of the people she meets in Marrakech through evocative portraits.

Chef Sophie Gressens imagined a tasting menu in collaboration with the Foundouk women cooks and inspired by local flavours.

February marks a significant occasion for artists from across the African continent as they showcase their talents on the vibrant art scene. Amidst this artistic fervor, it becomes essential to also show what’s going on in the Red City. Historic crossroad that was a melting pot of cultures and ideas for a long time, Marrakech has been a place of encounters and convergences that attracts and welcomes artists for centuries.

Visitors to the exhibition are invited to come and lost or found their landmarks in the Medina, to find themselves in the midst of a bustling crowd, wandering through winding streets and alleys, pushing the doors of the city’s foundouks, negotiating spices, carpets and, above all, works of art. The exhibition will take place at the Foundouk Gargaa, an ancient caravanserai that once served as a hub for trade, particularly the sale of dried fruits – hence the name “Gargaa,” which translates to nuts. Nestled beneath the expansive branches of a 300-year-old Belombra, visitors can refresh themselves with a rosemary flavored lemon juice crafted by chef Sophie Gressens while enjoying a slice of nut pie. From here, you can also admire the stunning peaks of the Atlas Mountains – the same mountains that inspired Brodeuse Voyageuse’s embroideries.

Between portraits and abstractions, textiles and paintings, these artists retrace a territory, an identity through culture, crafts, memories, encounters. In an era where women are prevented in several parts of the world -prevented from speaking, from disposing of their own bodies-, Maison Sœurs wills to ensure the voice of women artists. Artists who find and preserve the past by their technics, craftsmanship, memories and imagine their future by construction and encounters. Camille Bertrand and Soumiya Jalal preserve a culture through craft while valuing modernity and contemporary practices. Meanwhile, Anastasia Komyakova remains attached to human beings, individuals and collective traumas and joys.

These artists remind us that Art has to speak about the individual as well as the collective. So that everyone might be able to say : this is my story, this is our story.
